Jonathan Zhu of the Lab led a group of 60+ founding members from 20+ universities in China to obtain approval from Chinese Association of History of Journalism and Communication (CAHJC) at its annual board meeting in Xian on April 21, to establish a new division on computational communication research under the national society of the field in China. The approval resulted from a competitive bid, in which the board selected four out of six proposals after two rounds of voting. The computational division, formally known as Computational Communication Research Committee (CCRC), ranked No. 1 in both rounds.

In his oral presentation and defense before the election, Jonathan emphasized that CCRC serves as a bridge between classic quantitative and emerging computational methods, between academic basic research and industry applied research, and between scholars in China and elsewhere in the world.
CCRC will hold it’s the first annual meeting in August at Beijing Normal University, with Jonathan to serve the inauguration chair.
