One paper accepted by PacificVis 2019

A paper, entitled “Visual Analytics of Dynamic Interplay Between Behaviors in MMORPGs”, has recently been accepted for publication and presentation at PacificVis 2019. Two members of the Web Mining Lab, Dr. Winson Peng, and Mr. Ji Lan, participated in this study.

They work with a group of computer scientists at Zhejiang University to develop a visual analytic system which enables users to study the dynamic interplay between players’ purchase and communication behaviors in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) and investigate how local and global social structures among game players will contribute to such interplay.

Dr. Winson Peng is now an associate professor at Michigan State University. Mr. Ji Lan is now a joint PhD student co-supervised by Prof. Jonathan Zhu at City University of Hong Kong and Dr. Yingcai Wu at Zhejiang University.

PacificVis is an IEEE sponsored international visualization symposium, which is also a recommended international conference in Computer Graphics and Multimedia by China Computer Federation. The Pacific Visualization 2019 will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from April 23 to 26, 2019.

Lab alumni won outstanding alumni awards from the department

November 3-4, the 10th anniversary celebration of Department of Media and communication, City University of Hong Kong was held in Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre, Hong Kong. Graduates scattered around the world came to the reunion. At the Celebration ceremony, lab alumni Jiang Shujun (now at United Arabic Emirates Universit), Liang Hai (Chinese University of Hong Kong), Lu Heng (Miaozhen System), Peng Taiquan (Michigan State University), and Zhong Zhijing (Sun Yat-sen University) each received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department for their achievements in business, research and society.

Also at the ceremony, Jiang Shujun and Peng Taiquan presented a painting to the department as a gift.


Shujun Jiang Promoted to Associate Professor at UAEU

Dr. Shujun Jiang, graduated from the lab in 2008, has been promoted to associated professor at United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). Founded in 1976 by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, UAEU is the first and foremost comprehensive national university in the UAE. It ranks No.1 in the UAE and No.5 in the Arab World.

Shujun joined Mass Communication Department at UAEU as an assistant professor in 2012. In the past six years, she has achieved extensively in every area of her faculty career. She received Excellence in Teaching Award in her 3rd year at UAEU. She is a pioneer and leader in applying educational technology and pedagogy in teaching and learning. Her research focuses on online journalism, media credibility, and social media studies. Her papers were published in The Journal of International Communication, Information, Communication & Society, International Journal of Information and Education Technology and other journals and conferences. In 2018, her research proposal on “Understanding radicalization/counter-radicalization communication on social media: A computational approach” received a Research Excellence Award from Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge. Shujun also serves as a liaison officer in bridging UAEU with top universities in China for outreaching and improve UAEU international visibility, impact, and university ranking.

Lab Alumni Won Two Best Paper Awards from CAHJC

At the annual board meeting on April 21, the Chinese Association of History of Journalism and Communication (CAHJC), which is the national society of the field in China, elected the following two papers published by alumni of the Lab as the Best Papers of 2017:

Zhijin Zhong and Shujin Lin (2017, in Chinese). The emotional memories of the return of Hong Kong and Macau among web users in mainland China. Journalism and Communication Research, Issue 1.

Lun Zhang, Lu Zheng, & Tai-Quan Peng (2017). Structurally embedded news consumption on mobile news applications. Information Processing and Management, 53, 1242-1253.

Zhijin is a professor at Sun Yat-sen University and a graduate of the Lab in 2009. Lun is an associate professor at Beijing Normal University and a graduate from the Lab in 2011 and Taiquan Peng an associate professor at Michigan State University and graduate from Lab in 2008.

Qin Jie Awarded for Teaching Excellence

Dr. Qin Jie, graduated from the lab in 2014 and now a faculty member at the Hong Kong campus of Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD), is on the President’s List in recognition of her teaching excellence. The list indicates Dr. Qin is rated the top 10 among more than 650 faculty members of SCAD’s four global locations.

Dr. Qin has been a Professor of Communications at SCAD Hong Kong for three years.  She is praised extensively by her students as a creative and passionate professor. “You are an exemplary model that demonstrates the universities preeminent source of knowledge that is demonstrated in every program that we offer. ” Praised in the award letter by Derek Black, Associate Dean of Academic Services at SCAD Hong Kong.
